BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT AND FIRE

Mt 3:11-12; Lk 3:15-17

q       JESUS IS MIGHTIER THAN JOHN;

WHAT HE BAPTIZES WITH PROVES IT!!

q       JESUS PROMISED TO BAPTIZE HIS APOSTLES WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

TO GIVE THEM POWER TO WITNESS

q       JESUS BAPTIZED HIS APOSTLES WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT- THIS FULFILLED JOEL & PROVED HE WAS ALIVE AND EXALTED

q       JESUS ALSO BAPTIZED CORNELIUS’ HOUSEHOLD WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT-  SHOWED HE ACCEPTED GENTILES & MADE NO DISTINCTION JEW/GENTILE

BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT AND FIRE

Mt 3:11-12; Lk 3:15-17

q       JESUS DID NOT BAPTIZE W/ FIRE WHEN HE BAPTIZED W/ THE HOLY SPIRIT-

   MUST BE TWO DISTINCT BAPTISMS

q       ONLY TWO OCCASIONS OF HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM- NOT FOR EVERY BELIEVER

q       HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM DID NOT PROVIDE POWER TO LIVE THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

q       BAPTISM W/FIRE IS FOR THE “CHAFF”,

SINFUL WHO HAVE NOT BEEN SAVED

One other parallel passage:

Mk 1:7-8- I baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit (no mention of fire).

Another occasion:  What John was told before Jesus’ baptism:

John 1:29-34- One on whom the Spirit descends and remains is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

(again, no mention of fire)

Jesus’ promise to His apostles:

Acts 1:1-8  For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.  You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be my witnesses.

(cp. Heb 2:3-4)

Jesus’ promise fulfilled:

Acts 1:26 and he (Matthias) was added to the eleven apostles- 2:1-4 “they” spoke with tongues (spoke of the mighty deeds of God);  2:14- Peter, taking his stand with the eleven- these men are not drunk.

Acts 2:16-18 This is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel- In the last days- I will pour forth of my Spirit on all mankind (flesh)

Acts 2:33 Jesus is resurrected, He poured forth this which you both see and hear- Jesus did the “baptizing”.

One other occasion of Jesus baptizing with the Spirit:

Jesus baptized with the Spirit again- He did to the household of Cornelius what he did to the apostles.

Acts 10:44-48 Spirit fell on Cornelius’ household (Gentiles),  They spoke with tongues and exalted God.  Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we?

Acts 11:15-18  the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as He did upon us at the beginning.  And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

THEREFORE if God gave to them the same gift as He gave to us also after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?  When THEY HEARD THIS, they quieted down and glorified God, saying, Well then God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life.

Acts 15:1-2, 6-11- Peter uses the baptism of the Holy Spirit to show that God made no distinction between Jew and Gentile and saved them both by grace through faith- not by keeping of the Law and circumcision!!  As Joel had predicted, God poured His Spirit upon all flesh.

Conclusions about the “baptism with the Holy Spirit and fire”:  See Chart

Jesus baptizing in fire:  Mt 3:12; Lk 3:17 is a commentary on baptism with fire.  See also:

May we seek forgiveness so Jesus will never baptize us with fire!!
